Cherry Creek is one of Denver’s most prestigious, desirable areas, and for good reason!

In Cherry Creek North, which extends across 16 blocks, there are hundreds of businesses, including: shops, restaurants, spas, art galleries, and boutique hotels.

Add in Cherry Creek Mall, which is home to some of the top brands in America (including Nordstrom’s, Neiman Marcus, Restoration Hardware, Tiffany & Co., Hermès, Gucci, Burberry, and Louis Vuitton), and you have an upscale area that’s walkable, interesting, and beautiful.

It wasn’t always this way!

In the 1920s-1940s, Cherry Creek was considered a “suburban” neighborhood to downtown Denver, and in the 1950s, the Denver Dry Goods department store was the anchor for a shopping center that included seventeen other stores.

Starting in the 1970s, many of the small, single family bungalows from the 1940s and 1950s (which were located on relatively large lots), were scraped off and replaced by rows of 2-story and 3-story, upscale townhomes.

When the Cherry Creek Mall opened in 1990, the scrape-off trend accelerated, leading to rapid residential development in Cherry Creek North.

The next major transformation to Cherry Creek North occurred in 2014, when the zoning changed from maximum building heights of 55 feet (approximately 4-5 stories) to maximum heights ranging from 8-12 stories (depending on where the building is located).

Today, these mid-rise buildings include a mix of office space, condos, restaurants and retail, with the cranes stretching across the skyline signaling more buildings to come.

Through its dramatic changes, Cherry Creek has maintained its unique appeal, and walkability is one of the best reasons to live in Cherry Creek. You can keep your car parked and walk to shop or grab a coffee or ice cream cone, happy hour drinks, or a meal on one of the many restaurant patios. Or, you can just walk for the sake of walking and people-watching!
